My Jaca Day Experience

Ever since I started singing I had a dream to perform on a big stage in front of thousands of people. I thought this would never happen though – at least not for a long time – but I still wanted to always keep trying to achieve my dream. After I released my debut single, “Heartbeat”, a friend of ours told us about a competition at Jacaranda FM where musicians could send in their videos and stand a chance of being selected and voted for as the opening act for Jacaranda Day 2019. At JacaDay, some of South Africa’s top artists would perform so to be the opening act would be an amazing honour and experience. We decided that we would enter the competition and we sent Jacaranda FM the music video for “Heartbeat” – with only hours until the closing time for entries!

I was in shock when I heard that my song had played on the radio and I was selected among four other musicians as a finalist in the competition – out of thousands of entries! I couldn’t believe it! I didn’t know what to think from here. Now, the public would vote for who they think should be the opening act winner. After a few days, the day to announce the winner came…

I knew that the winner would be announced that day. I didn’t know what to think – if it would be me who won or someone else. I was nervous the whole morning.

I was brought a phone call. My heart sank – and I’m pretty sure I went pale too. “This is it,” I thought. The nerves and adrenaline exploded in my body. I didn’t know what to think I would be told in that phone call.

“You’ve won.”
That’s the last thing I heard on that phone call. All I remember after that is bursting into tears. The rest of the world disappeared at that moment. I couldn’t believe it. I did it. The next day, I was interviewed on Jacaranda FM and performed live on air. I also got to meet the amazing Brendan Peyper. It was such a fun experience and I will never forget it.

I had round-about a 15-20 minute set as the opening act of Jacaranda Day. When I performed, that time felt more like two minutes. Everything went so quickly but it was still one of the best experiences of my life. It was an extremely hot day. People were dancing in the audience and there were amazing vibes all around.

I will always look back on this experience and smile at how lucky I was and how my
hard work paid off. I hope that there is much more to come.
